How Do I File an Amended Return?

Erin (realtor) asks:

Mike, I recently found out that I qualified for a credit last year that I did not take.  How do I file an ammended return to go back and correct my return to get the money I’m entitled to?

Answer:

Hi Erin. An amended Form 1040 is known as a 1040-X. You can find the form for download and printing at this page.

It’s not the easiest form you’ll ever fill out, but it really isn’t too bad.  It’s made up primarily of three columns.  In one column you list all the figures shown on your original Form 1040.  In the second column you show the net change. (For most lines, this will be zero, unless you have several corrections to make.) And in the third column, you show the new, correct amount for each line. Then you simply work through some calculations at the bottom of the form to determine how much money you now owe the IRS, or how much money they now owe you.
