Taxes Made Simple

When Will I Receive my W-2 (or 1099)?

A reader asks: I still haven't gotten my W-2 yet for this year. What's the actual deadline for when an employer is supposed to send me my W-2?

My answer: The deadline (for both Form W-2 for employees and Form 1099-MISC for independent contractors) is January 31. So you should have already received it. That said, it's pretty common for employers to be a few days late getting their forms out. (Sucks, I know. But it's true.)

If you haven't received your W-2 (or 1099) by the middle of February, I'd suggest getting in touch with the Accounts Payable department at your employer to make sure that they have your current mailing address.

Side note: The deadline for Form 1099-B (the form sent by brokerage firms to their clients) has been extended to Feb 15 this year. However, this does not affect the deadlines for your regular 1099 (officially referred to as 1099 MISC) or your W-2.
