Taxes Made Simple

Why Every Business Owner Should Do Their Taxes at Least Once

Not the normal advice you get from a tax professional, is it? Regardless, it’s a good idea. Now, I know that sitting down and filling out complicated/technical-looking forms doesn’t exactly sound terribly thrilling to most business owners. But a) it’s really not that bad, and b) that’s not the point

When you add up all the different taxes your business has to pay, in all likelihood, they constitute your business’s single biggest expense. Given all the things you do when starting a business in an attempt to keep costs as low as possible, doesn’t it simply make sense to make (at least) the same efforts with your taxes?

Of course you may think that you’re actually likely to end up paying more tax by preparing your own return than you would if you had a professional prepare it. That’s possible. Far more important, however, is the knowledge you’ll gain from going through the process even one time.  You’ll learn exactly how all the different things you do play a role in determining how much tax you owe. And you’ll be able to use that knowledge in the future when evaluating different courses of action.

Most importantly, by doing your own taxes, you’ll be far more educated about the topic in general and where to find answers to tax questions. This will prevent you from having to shell out money on a fairly regular basis to have your accountant answer relatively basic questions. You’ll find that you can answer most questions yourself by doing some research online or by dropping $13 on a book about business taxation.

Furthermore, your newfound knowledge will even save you money on those occasions when you do end up having to consult a tax pro for some guidance. Given that most accountants bill hourly, you’re clearly going to be spending less money if you already know precisely what question you need answered before you walk into his/her office.

Be sure to engage in this endeavor sometime while your business is still young. It will make it far less complicated, and you’ll find yourself reaping the benefits of increased understand year after year. Also, when your business does grow to the point that it’s time to consider changing business structures, you’ll be better equipped to understand all the ramifications of doing so.

What do you have to lose? Worst-case scenario: even after some research/reading you aren’t sure exactly how to fill out a particular form, you end up having to call in a professional, and you are no worse-off than you would be if you had farmed it out in the first place.

Who knows, you may even find that it’s not the worst thing you’ve had to do as a business owner, and from now on you’ll be empowered to decide for yourself every year whether or not you want to hire somebody to do it for you.
