Joomla Made Simple

Lesson 3: Using Modules

With Joomla, one of the primary ways to customize your site is through the use of modules. Regardless of what type of site you're creating, you'll find that modules play an important role in adding to your site's professional appearance and appeal to visitors.

So What Exactly Is a Module?

Modules are simply tools that allow you to place content on your site in areas other than the main content area. For example, on the page you're on right now, the logo to the right is an image placed in a module. The copyright information in the footer is a module. In fact, even the navigation menu above is a module.

You would create a module to add any of the following to your site:

  • A footer with the copyright information for your site's content.
  • A menu at the bottom (or top) of the page with links to things like your privacy policy, or other content that you want to be accessible, but not featured in your main menu.
  • An automatically-updated list of "recent posts" if you're going to have a blog on your site.
  • An automatically-updated list of "popular articles" that links to the most popular content on your site (as measured by page views).
  • A search box that will allow visitors to search your site.
  • Just about anything else that you can think of that you would want to appear in any place other than the main content area of a page.

  • How to change the module's position on the page.
  • How to rename the module.
  • How to hide the module's title.
